San Francisco Energy Ordinance - Vert Energy GroupWhat is the Energy Ordinance?

The San Francisco Existing Commercial Buildings Energy Performance Ordinance requires buildings over 10,000 gross square feet to have a qualified engineering firm conduct an Energy Audit every 5 years, as well as submit an “Annual Energy Benchmark Summary” annually on April 1st (Environment Code Chapter 20).


Who must comply with this law?

Property owners are ultimately responsible for complying with the Law. However, the building’s property manager is typically tasked with overseeing the compliance process. As a qualified engineering firm, Vert Energy Group will assist with completing the Energy Audit & Benchmark as well as submitting the required documents to the Department of the Environment.


What is an Energy Audit?

An Energy Audit is a detailed analysis of a building to identify all opportunities to reduce energy and water use. The end result is a report that includes a list of recommendations for upgrades, along with an estimate of their cost and payback.


What is an Energy Benchmark?

An energy benchmark gives a building a score from 1 to 100 to determine how energy efficiently it is currently operating. This allows building operators to set investment priorities, identify under-performing buildings, validate past efficiency upgrades, and even receive an ENERGY STAR® Certification.


How is this law enforced?

Buildings 25,000 square feet and larger can be fined $100 per day, and buildings smaller than 25,000 square feet can be fined $50 per day.
